Our Classroom Expectations

Our class of "Super Learners" focuses on maintaining a positive attitude toward learning.  On a daily basis we support each other in our endeavor to learn and put forth our best efforts.  We strive to consistently maintain a classroom of mutual respect for one another.  I believe that one student’s positive attitude and ability to be an excellent role model can positively affect all of those in that learning environment.  It is also possible for one student's inappropriate behavior to interrupt or disrupt all students’ learning.

In order to recognize students for their cooperative attitudes toward learning and positive participation during lessons, they earn the opportunity for special class privileges.  This is accomplished through turning in all classroom and homework assignments on time, exhibiting an exceptional work ethic, being a good role model for others, as well as not having to utilize Steps 2 or 3 mentioned below.  The special privileges range from a variety of choices such as as end of the day treat, using a favorite pen for the day, sitting in a teacher chair, class choice activity, to a free book from the class book order.  I want students to be enthusiastic about coming to school and to realize that I appreciate their hard work, passion, and dedication to their school, education and classmates.

Our classroom expectations focus on each student learning to be responsible for his or her own learning and behavior, while understanding the impact it has on others.  When a student is not in control of such things as; talking out during instruction, following directions, being attentive during teacher-directed lessons, cannot keep hands and feet to him or herself, or does not complete the work in a timely manner with their best effort given, the following plan will be put in place:

Step 1 - verbal warning stating the expectation and continued support in

                 working toward meeting that expectation.

Step 2 - Dojo message sent home and goal setting with the teacher.

Step 3 - Call home and goal setting to include the family.

I have also incorporated a team oriented classroom behavior system, which allows the entire class to earn a prize for our class Avitar, "A+ Super Learners".  When the class, as a team, exhibits responsible behavior during, classroom instruction, school assemblies, passing in the hallway, using the drinking fountain and restroom, at our lockers, or during recess and lunch they can earn one point for the "A+ Super Learners" Avitar.  When we have enough points accumulated for our goal, then we will celebrate together as a class.

                                                               Graded Papers

Just a little note about the graded papers you see come home. First, I try my best to grade papers daily, they are then sent  home the next school day that the student is in attendance. Any papers that score below 70% may be corrected and returned  for an improved grade. I put a check mark next to incorrect items, once corrected, I put a star on top of the check mark.  If the item is still incorrect I put another check mark in a different color ink. The student then receives an improved grade for  that assignment.

You may also notice corrected papers that you did not see until they were corrected. As often as time allows, I do the corrections  with students.  It would be beneficial for you to discuss the corrected learning with your child to reiterate the skill learned.

In Tigerview you will see a note in the comments requesting a correction at times. Once corrected and returned, a note stating the  new percent entered is written on the paper and returned to the student.  Corrections have to be completed and returned within two days.

Please know that I am gently and reassuringly encouraging our kids to be better, smarter and stronger learners by noticing their errors  and learning from them. If you ever have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Remember . . . . together we can!!!
